How to Write a Job Posting That Attracts Top Candidates in Ontario

Most job postings repel the candidates you want. Here's a practical framework for writing effective job ads in Ontario's competitive GTA market.

Start With the Candidate, Not the Company

The most common mistake in job posting writing is starting with a lengthy company description before mentioning anything about the role. Lead with what the person will actually do and what they'll get.

Write your job posting from the candidate's perspective: 'What would I want to know in the first 15 seconds?' That's your opening paragraph.

The Anatomy of an Effective Job Posting

1. A clear, searchable job title

Use the title that people actually search for, not your internal title. 'Warehouse Associate' will get found. 'Fulfilment Team Member Level II' will not.

2. A two-to-three sentence role summary

'You'll be managing inbound shipping for a Brampton-based distribution facility, working a fixed day shift with a team of 12' is infinitely more compelling than 'Join our dynamic team in a fast-paced environment.'

3. Key responsibilities — in plain language

List the actual day-to-day tasks. Keep it to 5–8 bullet points. Use active verbs.

4. Honest requirements — and nothing more

Separate 'must-haves' from 'nice-to-haves.' Requiring too many qualifications disproportionately filters out women and equity-seeking candidates.

5. The salary range — non-negotiable in 2025

Postings without salary ranges consistently underperform. A range (even a wide one) beats nothing.

6. Location and schedule clarity

Include the actual work location, shift times, and whether there's any flexibility.

7. A concise company description

Two to three sentences is enough. Focus on things a candidate would actually care about.

8. Clear instructions on how to apply

Tell candidates exactly what to do next.

Common Mistakes That Kill Application Quality

  • Writing for compliance, not candidates
  • Inflating requirements
  • No salary range — the single highest-impact omission to fix
  • Typos and formatting errors
  • Too long — aim for 400–600 words for most roles
