Temp-to-Perm Jobs in the GTA: What They Are and How to Land One
Learn how temp-to-perm jobs work in Ontario, what industries offer them, and how to turn a contract placement into a permanent career.
What Is a Temp-to-Perm Job?
A temp-to-perm position — also called contract-to-hire — starts as a temporary placement, typically lasting 30 to 90 days. During that period, you work at the employer's location as a regular employee would, but you're technically employed by the staffing agency. At the end of the contract period, the employer can choose to bring you on permanently.
At Western Jobs, around 82% of our temp-to-perm placements convert to full-time employment.
Think of temp-to-perm as a paid working interview. You get to evaluate the company just as much as they're evaluating you.
How Does the Temp-to-Perm Process Work?
Step 1: Apply through a staffing agency
Submit your resume to a staffing agency like Western Jobs. A recruiter reviews your background, skills, and goals — and matches you with employers who are a realistic fit.
Step 2: Interview with the agency
You'll have a screening call or interview with the agency recruiter — a low-pressure conversation to understand what kind of work you're looking for.
Step 3: Get placed with an employer
If you're a strong match for an open role, the agency presents your profile to the employer.
Step 4: Complete the contract period
You start work as a temporary employee. The employer evaluates your performance, and you get to experience the workplace culture firsthand.
Step 5: Receive a permanent offer
If both parties are happy — and usually they are — the employer extends a permanent job offer at the end of the contract.
